An hour of music. Contains tracks from Laurie Spiegel, Suzanne Ciani + Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Architeuthis Rex, Black Decelerant, Tiny Hairs, MV Carbon + Charlemange Palestine, Conception Huerta, and Hexa (Lawrence English and Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart).

The opening track, "The Unquestioned Answer," is from The Expanding Universe, a album released in 1980 from pioneering electronic musician Laurie Spiegel. The tracks on this album were composed using Bell Laboratories' GROOVE system, a complicated arrangement of analog synthesizers of digital microcomputers (GROOVE itself is an acronym for Generating Realtime Operations On Voltage-controlled Equipment). Cutting-edge technology for the time—obsolete now, but the sounds she produced on that system 45 years ago still sound fresh to modern ears. [Spiegel also composed the opening track for the Voyager Golden Record, which, as Simon Reynolds points out in this appreciative longform profile, gives her a unique shot at being the first human to ever have their music heard by an alien civilization.]

My Bandcamp playlists, made from my personal collection, will always be free to all readers. Enjoy~
