Jean-Paul Jeunet's ALIEN RESURRECTION //

Look, this isn't a great installment: too often it feels like Alien fan-fiction, and I'm sorry to report that Ryder's performance is a dud. But the film earns its spot with a handful of good performances (Weaver's feral turn is fun, and Ron Perlman and J. E. Freeman both inhabit the franchise well) and a whole host of great little details: the gruesome hybrids in their murky tanks; Riley's impossible basketball shot; the Newborn's thrillingly weird gurgles, coos, and shrieks (supplied by experimental vocalist Joan La Barbara)
